Management of physical pain and symptoms

Palliative care involves the management of physical pain caused by illness, and the control of distressing and unpleasant symptoms (such as diarrhoea or breathing difficulties). In many cases, effective pain and symptom management can liberate a patient to resume daily life. When a patient has reached a later stage of illness, medication can drastically reduce their suffering and discomfort, allowing them to retain their dignity right until their death.
