As we celebrate Pain Awareness Week, we call on all partners to work with us to address the systemic barriers that continue to limit access to opioids for pain relief and other symptom management. We remain concerned that average opioid consumption in Africa is only 77 Standard Defined Daily Doses (DDD) per million inhabitants per year — far below the global average of 238 DDD.
Serious illness causes physical, psychological, social and spiritual suffering — and evidence shows the global burden of serious health-related suffering (SHS) has increased significantly, with 80% of this burden concentrated in low- and middle-income countries.
