A strong evidence base is essential to advancing palliative care policy and practice across Africa. APCA works with researchers, universities and partners to generate, synthesise and share evidence that demonstrates the need for, and impact of, palliative care.
Our work in this area includes:
- Conducting and supporting primary research studies and systematic reviews on palliative care in Africa
- Building the research capacity of African researchers and institutions through mentorship and training workshops
- Publishing findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals to inform policy and practice
- Coordinating a growing network of researchers and institutions committed to palliative care research
- Ensuring evidence generated is translated into practical tools, guidelines and advocacy messages
Between 2011 and 2020, APCA supported 32 research projects, including 28 primary studies and 3 systematic reviews, resulting in 168 scientific publications. We mentored 23 researchers, held workshops attended by 192 participants, and built 25 research partnerships, helping to grow a research network of over 200 members.
Under its 2020-2030 Strategic Plan, APCA remains committed to building the evidence base for palliative and comprehensive chronic care in Africa, ensuring research findings continue to strengthen policy, training and service delivery across the continent.
