In Africa, many patients and families who are facing advanced incurable illnesses struggle with complex multi-dimensional symptoms and concerns, which are poorly assessed and managed , resulting into health-related suffering and poor end of life care outcomes. The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) and its partners adapted and piloted the Managing advanced disease and living meaningfully (CALM), a person-centred psychotherapy Intervention, which involves the use of self expression in a supportive environment . Our pilot work shows that intervention reduces anxiety, worry, spiritual and psychological distress and empowers patients with advanced disease to communicate effectively about their needs and preferences and to navigate illness with dignity.
"When I understand things, I am less anxious and can make better decisions." CALM recipient
APCA is using the lessons learned in Uganda to replicate this impactful program across four countries in Africa through its extensive network of members and implementing partners. Our goal is to raise $100,000 by June 2025.
This Giving Season, help us expand CALM’s reach to underserved and vulnerable populations. Your donation will bring compassionate care to more patients and families across the continent. Give today and make a lasting impact.
